Virginia Farm Bureau’s Vice President and it’s governmental relation’s department Senior Vice President are both from Southside VA. If you have met them, it is no surprise that Southside is all in when it comes to supporting agriculture. Robert Mills and Martha Moore give 100% to everything they do and are strong voices in Agriculture.
I was struck by how Southside is investing in the future of Agriculture, from the ODAC building as a one stop place to provide services to area farmers and fun educational events to the general public to the investment in STEAM and Trade education. I was very impressed by the Institute for Advance Learning and Research in Danville and have recommend plenty of those who don’t want to go the college track to look into these opportunities. All of this exemplifies how farmers can invest in the future of agriculture outside of their farm.
If I close my eyes, I can still smell the tobacco. It is certainly the Virginia crop I knew littlest about prior to this seminar. The full circle of tobacco imports, exports, and taxes gives a new complicated twist to ag business. The employees at JTI leaf were welcoming and open to answering our questions, something we have not found at all large companies.
