Brenden Burke

Brendan is the State Underwater Archaeologist for the Virginia Department of Historic Resources (VDHR) and Co-owner of Glendale Farm Products. While disparate in focus, Brendan studies maritime history through archaeology, often focusing on the transportation of agricultural and industrial goods throughout Virginia’s inland navigations. The intersection of maritime trade and Virginia’s agricultural development is strongly intertwined. His work with VDHR and agricultural background provides a unique perspective in stewarding our past while supporting success for the future.

A Virginia native, Brendan grew up in Amelia County and worked on local farms in high school. Active in his high school FFA chapter, he still has his jacket and State Farmer pin. In 2003, he graduated with a B.A. in history and anthropology from Longwood University and received an M.A. in anthropology from William & Mary in 2006. Brendan lives in Amelia with his wife, Lilli, and they operate Glendale Farm Products to produce eggs, heritage breed chickens, Katahdin sheep, cattle, and honey.

Quote:

“Virginia’s agricultural community is a diverse landscape of products and participants. It also faces significant challenges on many fronts. I’m honored to join VALOR Class VIII and work with my colleagues and the community to find solutions and new ways forward for agricultural success in the Commonwealth.”
