I am the Associate Director of Development for the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences & Virginia Cooperative Extension. I am a current member of the VALOR (Virginia Agriculture Leaders Obtaining Results) Class IV. I joined the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in March 2018. My responsibilities include strengthening the college's fundraising efforts in support of endowments, current operations, and other capital purposes with an emphasis on cultivating and stewarding major gifts for both the college and Virginia Cooperative Extension. I earned a bachelor's degree from Virginia Tech in resource management with a focus on consumer studies. Upon completing my undergraduate degree, I served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Guatemala, partnering with Junior Achievement on small-business development. After completing my service, I continued my education, earning a master's in business administration from Radford University. Prior to my position in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, I worked in various roles in higher education, including college admissions and higher education readiness tools. My most recent position was as a development officer for Virginia Tech's College of Science. I look forward to learning more about Virginia Agriculture and developing additional insight into the industry.

Southside: One of Virginia’s “Extremes”

January 7, 2020 emilywongvt

I wasn't really sure what to expect during our trip to Southside Virginia. This is a part of our state that I have visited quite few times personally but never in the context of the agriculture industry. We hit the ground running as always when we arrived in Danville. Our first visit was to JTI… Continue reading Southside: One of Virginia’s “Extremes”

What are Microgreens?

May 15, 2019 emilywongvt

The Seminar IV trip to Northern Virginia/DC was a unique experience. We learned about the challenges that come with urban agriculture and some of the unexpected benefits of serving an affluent population. We saw both ends of the spectrum in terms of accessibility to nutritious food. One of the highlights of the trip was visiting… Continue reading What are Microgreens?

Lights, camera, action.

The VALOR trip to Richmond was extremely informative in so many ways. I enjoyed learning more about the legislative process, Farm Bureau's lobbying efforts, and the Myers-Briggs assessment. As always, the opportunity to review my preferences and how they contribute to my professional and personal relationships was helpful in so many ways. I found… Continue reading Lights, camera, action.

A Legacy of Peanuts

January 4, 2019 emilywongvt

I had the privilege of learning so much during the VALOR Class IV's first traveling seminar. We visited the Tidewater and Eastern Shore regions of Virginia. This was my first time seeing the Eastern Shore which was very interesting. It is amazing when I consider the extreme differences in many of Virginia's regions from the… Continue reading A Legacy of Peanuts
