Hello, I am Andrew Smith from Hewlett, Virginia, which is in Hanover County. I grew up and lived on a family dairy farm for most of my life. Like many in my area involved in agriculture, I was active in the Future Farmers of America (FFA), an activity that took me down many adventurous paths, both geographically and professionally.
I attended Virginia Tech where I received a degree in Dairy Science. While studying there, I also became involved in a social professional fraternity, Alpha Gamma Rho, which, like the FFA, was an introduction to professionals in the industry, and personal development opportunities. I currently work for the members of the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation where I am a governmental relations professional. My department and I represent our members’ views to the policy makers of Virginia. In addition, I own and operate with my family a commercial hay and grain operation.
I am fortunate to have been accepted in the inaugural class of VALOR. I look forward to developing new skills and honing old ones, to help our industry better tell our story, and grow personally. VALOR is an outstanding opportunity to anyone in our industry that wants to help communicate what agriculture is and work to make a difference in the challenges the industry faces daily. I am excited to be a part of what I believe is the beginning of what will be a must for our future industry leaders in Virginia.
