Our recent trip to Southside VA might have been our shortest VALOR seminar to date, but it helped to reinforce for me a lesson I was taught many years ago. A former colleague of mine always used to remind us that:
“When your values are clear, your choices are easy.”
This statement constantly plays on repeat in my head, and really has been an effective litmus test for me when making decisions. While we were in Southside VA we had the chance to visit the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR). IALR’s mission is to serve as a regional catalyst for economic transformation through applied research, advanced learning, economic development, manufacturing advancement and conference services. Everything taking place at IALR ties directly back to their mission.
“Here’s how our work is driving economic transformation in the region” was typically one of the first statements made by each individual we met while at IALR. They have created a culture within their organization of being mission-focused, and thus, employees are able to speak with confidence about their projects, initiatives, and research. Whether it was learning about their Accelerated Training in Defence Manufacturing (ATDM) program, Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) Innovation Center, plant endophyte research, analytical chemistry lab, or GO TEC program; each presenter helped to paint the picture of how IALR is at the center of economic and workforce development efforts in the region.

After our visit to IALR, my “spidey senses” were tingling and I was highly attuned when the rest of our presenters helped us to understand their values, based on the decisions they made as a part of their operations. Many thanks to Locust Level Farms, Gregory Family Farm, and Briar View Farms for opening your doors to our class, and sharing your values.
In his book Start With Why, author Simon Sinek says, “people don’t buy what you do, they by why you do it.” Having a clear understanding of your values helps you make decisions in life and business. Openly declaring and living your values help you to build trust and strong relationships with your customers. Thanks for that solid reminder, Southside!
I hope everyone has a great holiday season! I’m looking forward to reconnecting with my classmates in January for our international seminar trip to Kenya! Until next time!
